Life Vision: Planning Your Unique Journey

“Give to us clear vision that we may know where to stand and what to stand for.” - Peter Marshall.
Are you clear on where you are going in YOUR life? Do you have a sense of purpose beyond any roles you might have for example with family, work or friendships? What riches do you want bring to your life and the world around you? Creating a life vision is something we have to do for ourselves. This vision will be unique for each one of us just like our fingerprints.
Some of us reach a crisis point when we go through a life transition, like having children, a career change or a bereavement. When I had my first child I realised I had somehow crossed a river and there wasn’t a boat back to that old familiar life. These big changes can leave us feeling like a ship without a rudder. As a life coach I recognise that this is an opportunity to create something new and dare I say it - better! Others just feel unfulfilled, but sense that there must be more to life than the treadmill. It takes faith, courage and willingness to step out and explore new territory.
So what are the benefits of creating a life vision?
ü Living an authentic life
ü Establishing principles to live by
ü Personal fulfilment
ü More energy!
ü Creating a legacy in the world
You may dismiss what you really want as a dream, fantasy or a something that’s possible only if everything else is perfect. Alternatively you could get started right now!
“The secret to living the life of your dreams is to start living the life of your dreams today, in every little way you possibly can.” - Mike Dooley
Create a reserve of time, energy and space
Keeping busy can be a way of avoiding facing the bigger questions of life like who am I? What’s my life really about? What can I bring to the world? Getting some answers to these questions will require time, commitment and a positive frame of mind.
We often focus on getting things DONE. But instead consider your state of BEING. For example would you like to experience life from a deeper, calmer and more inspiring place? Why not try de-cluttering your life, by letting go of some commitments, possessions and people to give yourself more time, energy and space?
Get into alignment with yourself
We talk about life vision, like it is something we can see with our eyes. In reality we need to harness our mind, body, spirit and heart. It’s important to start noticing on a day-to-day basis, what feels right, versus what jars and develop increased self- awareness. How many times have you said yes to something when you really wanted to say no? This conflict is a signal that something is out of alignment. We need to keep correcting our course to get onto the right path in life, just as when we make any other journey.
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.” - Antoine de Sainte Exupery
Here are some of the coaching questions I might ask a client. Why not try them for yourself?
- How do you (honestly) feel about your life at the moment?
- What does your ideal life look, feel, and sound like?
- How seriously are you taking yourself?
- Who do you admire, why and what might this reflect about you?
- How will you commit the time, space and energy to make this journey?
